Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Adam Eckstein [email] on Sat, Jun 5, 2010

Most crosses so far have been down on Rise 'N Shine and Rose Gilardi because they where inside all winter under lights and then brought out. It is the beginning of the season but so far hear is my list. I do not know how successful they will be, but by the hot weather at night I think I will be less success than last year. Rise N Shine is done with it first flush so I am hoping that I flushes one more time. Since it is the most full grown plant I have except R. glauca which will start in a week or two. My main goal with most crosses is hardy or disease resistant miniature or a parent plant for these goals, but I do a lot of crosses out of curiosity.

Rise N Shine x Rose Gilardi
Rise N Shine x William Baffin
Rise N Shine x Paul Barden's(Sequia Ruby x Guinee)
Rise N Shine x Lawrence Davis's CarefreeCoper
Rise N Shine x Paul Barden's R. nutkana
Rise N Shine x R. woodsii
(All these Rise N Shine was done in larger number mostly cause the seed parent provided the opportunity.)

Constellation (Saville)x William Baffin

Gala (Saville) x William Baffin

Tausendschon x R. woodsii
Tausendschon x Rose Gilardi

St. Thomas China X R. woodsii
St. Thomas China x Tausendschon
(These will probably fail St. Thomas China has yet to produce seed and this plant is very large. Might try it as a pollen later on.)

Rose Gilardi x William Baffin
Rose Gilardi x R. woodsii
Rose Gilardi x Angel Face
(These crosses were all done inside in winter under lights just to see if it would work. I was limited on the parents I used because that is what I had in cold storage pretty much. I had a few more but those where in smaller supply so I did not want to take chances with those. They are in the fridge right now. Waiting for another flush from Rose Gilardi)

Waiting on R. glauca not sure I know what I am going to put on it. But I will do R. woodsii and R. arkansas (from my mother in law) because these where relatively successful last year. Also will try Tausendschon and Rose Gilardi on it.

Hopefully I will get some new breeding stock out of this. I have 5 or 6 seedlings now from last year that show great promise. So hopefully some of these will have that too. Good luck everyone in their efforts.

Oh I made a mistake the one pollen parent is not (Sequia Ruby x Guinee) but its Paul Barden's (Penny Ante x William Baffin). I was thinking the other because that is one of the plants I weeded out earlier today.

I haven't done work at all-- but I did some (r. kordesii X Basye's Amphiploid) X Joan's Rugosa Tetraploid # 3.

I have done a Gold Medal X R. spinnosima pimpenellia, and I wanted to do several... but I just got one.

I also did a Tiffany X Pacific Serenade.

So, not much...

Today was the first day I could get out and check out what is ready to cross. Stinking rain. I have lots of balled and moldy blooms.

All I managed to do was Cal Poly X Therese Bugnet. The only reason I made that cross was that they were the only two roses available. I didn't plan on that, but I felt the NEED to spread a little pollen around. If the weather hold I should be very busy this week.

This time last year I had the URGE to start deliberately pollinating even though it was winter here (it was my first crack at all of this LOL), and I had limited roses to play with at the time.. In the end I decided those crosses were crap and removed the hips..this time round I am going to do the same thing again, as the winter weather here seems good enough to try out...we shall see.

Rob I like a lot of your crosses. At least on paper; I have not grown many of these myself.

Somehow I forgot Rise N Shine x Purple Pavement. I only have three hips of this one but this one excites me a lot. If I get anther flush on Rise N Shine I will do another 12 or so crosses and hopefully get another 3 hips.

The only reason I have so many crosses done is that the miniatures were kept inside during the winter. Having them in pots outside is sure death here. I think I will get one more flush of Rise N Shine and Rose Gilradi.

I am hoping that Constellation makes a good parent. It seems to have advantages over Rise N Shine. The main one is it seems to have better powdery mildew resistance, plus it has more petals, and is very fragrant. Many Rise N Shine seedlings get powdery mildew much greater than Rise N Shine. Constellation wants to set op seed, but I do not now if they will grow.

Hi Adam. Like the crosses you've planned. I forgot to add Abraham Darby x Gil-1 (a striped Rose Gilardi OP miniature seedling). I am hoping for either a nice striped mini with full blossom or a striped version of Abraham Darby. Rose Gilardi is a nice mini to work with but I don't have it any more but do have my seedlings Gil-1 and Gil-5, which is a deeper red striped with white miniature. I've got a small garden area so I've tried to limit roses to those that are hardy, disease resistant and are good breeding material. I hope to obtain more miniatures to work with next season.

How did making crosses under lights work for you Adam?

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Adam Eckstein [email] on Sun, Jun 6, 2010

It worked pretty well. I did not try to many combinations but I did not have too many choices at pollen or seed parent either. I got half of what I tried to set to set. Except for all crosses to St. Thomas China failed. The only reason I tried again this summer on it was that I was bored and nothing else was flowering.

Our spring is two weeks early following a warmer practicaly snowless winter. So no snow protection. Spring came on so quickly that tender roses didn't get pruned. Nova Zembla is nine ft tall & blooming. It is as tender as a ht so normally there are no blooms until canes reach 8 ft at the end of august. My crosses from yesterday have been rained out. I'll have to dry off the blooms & redo. Not to be. I can hear the rain. So far:

Apricot Beauty x Prairie Celebration, My Hero. Fragrant Explorer*, Prairie Dawn, Trier, Royal Damask

((Belle de Crecy x Red Flower Carpet) x Fourth of July)1CrecyStripe x Eugene de Beauharnais, (Scarlet Moss x Paddy Stepens)peach, Nova Zembla, Prairie Night*

CalFront* x Metis, Mutabilis

Corylus x Metis

(Delany Sisters x Mme Isaac Peirere) x Singin' in the Rain

(Fourth of July x Scarlet Moss) x Apricot Beauty

Fragrant Explorer x Rugelda

R. glauca x CalFront

Hume's Blush x R. primula (some aborted), Williams' Double Yellow, Therese Bugnet, CalFront

Indigo x Fragrant Explorer

(Mme Isaac Pereire
x Henry Kelsey)1 x (Fourth of July x Apriot Beauty)russet

(Mme Isaac Perere x Henry Kelsey)2 x SamVirg2*

another MIP offspring x John Cabot

My Hero x Fragrant Explorer

(Rosa Pendulina x Prairie Dawn) x Cal Poly

Rugelda x Nova Zembla

Prairie Celebration x Prairie Night, (Scarlet Moss x Paddy Stephens)peach, (Nuites de Young x Prairie Dawn)2no mossing

Rabble Rouser x Rugelda

Royal Damask x Apricot Beauty

(Scarlet Moss x Paddy Stephens) x Apricot Beauty

Sweet Vigorosa x Arethusa

Therese Bugnet x Williams' Double Yellow, CalFront, R. primula, R. roxburghii

White u/k Austin x 1CrecyStripe

*Fragrant Explorer is likely an op seedling of George Vancouver. It is dark pink, cupped, fades lighter & has a gallica fragrance.
*Prairie Night is (Nuites de Young x Prairie Dawn). It has very fragrant soft moss, pale pink flowers of soft
substance & a subtle unique scent.
*CalFront is a blend of a selection of Calocarpa op & R. paulii rosea op. It blooms in clusters like R. paulii rosea & sets op hips readily. Hips are small. I've never grown them out. R. paulii rosea op refuses to accept foreign pollen, but will set generous op hips. The offsprings are clones of the parent with small flowers. Most of my other Calocarpae op selections
refuse foreign pollen.
*SamVirg - are seedlings of Samba Kordana x Maroon single Virginiana. There are 5 seedlings from the Virginiana. Alas she expired from neglect. Only SamVirg 1 & 2 are recurrent. The non recurrent ones are cane hardy so far. Sadly Samba Kordana has been deemed no good for shelf life by the Kordes firm, but she's a really good mother. SK was the only rose available when the late lamented Virginiana hybrid was in bloom.

Lydia,

Try Rugelda x Rabble Rouser. I found RR to be way better as a pollen parent. It didnt seem to like setting too many hips =(

Thanks Michael. I'll try that. Rabble Rouser is one of the few minis that survive here, even when they're grafted.

As Lydia mentioned, it is an early crossing season for us this year. Quite a change from last year, when it was towards the end of June before things got started. So far this is what I have done.

Prairie Celebration x Baby Love
Prairie Celebration x Pretty Lady

Carefree Beauty x Pretty Lady
Carefree Beauty x Baby Love - I tried this combination 2 years ago and most of the hips aborted. We'll see what happens this time around.
Carefree Beauty x Champlain
Carefree Beauty x L83
Carefree Beauty x Jim Lounsbery

Alberta x L83
Alberta x William Baffin

Carefree Wonder x L83
The McCartney Rose x L83
B14 (Folksinger x Baby Love) x L83 - B14 is an apricot mini
Yellow Magic x L83
B3 (Fairhope x Carefree Beauty) x L83 - B3 is a pink mini
Midnight Blue x L83
B24 (Gemini x Baby Love) x L83 - B24 is a yellow blend mini

A1 (Morden Sunrise x William Baffin) x Prairie Celebration

Yellow Magic x Carefree Copper
Luis Desamero x Carefree Copper

Outta the Blue x Baby Love

Baby Love x Pretty Lady

Paintbrush x Henry Kelsey

A lot of different crosses out there. I still feel like a kid going to an advance level course when I see what others are attempting.

Liz when you write L83- B24 is that 2 different crosses? I am not sure on your short hand.

I'm pretty depressed about this season. It wont stop raining. I dont have that many crosses yet and it's about 10 days when I usually stop.

I have this so far:

Amber Flower Carpet x "Carefree Copper"
Coral Drift x mixed pollen of Therese Bugnet/Nigel Hawthorn
Toprose x Yellow Brick Road
Royal Amethyst x (Rosa canina x Baby Love)
Rememberance x (Sevilliana x Pretty Lady)
Violet Mist x Henry's Blend

I am hoping to do the following this week if it will stop raining =(

Playboy x Shadow Dancer
Playboy x Double Treat
Summer Wind x Persian Flame
(Solitaire x Baby Love) x Electric Blanket

I hope I can make more than thta this season but the majority of it is up to nature since I dont use a greenhouse.

Definitely some great crosses out there and quite a bit of diversity too.

Adam, sorry about the shorthand. B24 is a 'keeper' seedling number for that Gemini x Baby Love seedling, which happens to be a yellow blend mini. I used it as a seed parent with L83 as the pollen parent.

Jadae, you have my sympathy about the rain...

Encouraged by one hybrid glutinosa X palustris seedling (which required freezing the pollen and almost a year of storage), I've been hammering away at glutinosa some more this season. Hoping for unusual foliage scent seedlings, I've used pollen from multiflora, helenae, and 'Mutabilis' and just for kicks 'Home Run'.

Also been putting 'Home Run' pollen on two hybrids:
"Jefferson" (found Damask) X 'Carefree Sunshine'
and 'Fragrant Cloud' X carolina.

Now, I'm getting ready to start putting various pollens on the local strain of palustris which is just starting into bloom.

>> one hybrid glutinosa X palustris seedling

Tom, do you have any pictures of this one?

This season I put glutinosa pollen on Scarlet Moss and use Scarlet Moss and Orange Moss pollen on glutinosa. It's a crap shoot because of the canina mieosis, I guess, but nothing ventured...

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Tom [email] on Mon, Jun 7, 2010

Hi Don,
I've taken a few pictures but the seedling is still pretty small. I'll see if I can find and post them anyway. I'm nearly certain of the intended hybridity though, because of an unusually vigorous growth habit compared to other glutinosa seedlings and most importantly... it has a foliage scent that closely resembles the flowerbud scent of palustris - and that was my primary goal!!!
Good luck with those glutinosa crosses. And don't be too worried about the Caninae meiosis. There are plenty of cases of this working itself out as the generations advance.
More later, Tom

I am hoping to do similar with my Rosa rubiginosa x Baby Love hybrids when they begin blooming in 1-2 years. I hope to cross them onto moss hybrids. I, too, will be completely ignoring the whole caninae issue, although I suppose that using caninae as male parents may help -- Who knows. I also bought an own-root Rosa pomifera last Fall. It should bloom in 2 years. Its probably a wase of time but Im fascinated with this whole group of species :)

Tom and Don, I am very interested in using R. glutinosa also. In January the first of my princess of wales (harkness) x glutinosa flowered. It was darker pink than the specie and a little less fragrant in the foliage. Surprisingly there is very little evidence of maternal input in this cross. I have a few more that I hope will flower this coming summer.
I also did a few crosses using applejack and glutinosa both ways. Nothing has flowered but the range in scent of the foliage is wonderful. There have been several with very intense cedar fragrance and others with a more pungent turpentine pong. Nothing with the sweet green apple of applejack yet. (Though as an aside I did produce a lovely seedling of R. glauca x applejack which combined the lovely leaf colour of glauca with strongly fragrant foliage).
This year I have focussed on attempting to add more user friendly attributes to my glutinosa collection, such as fewer thorns and repeat bloom. Definitely a long term goal.

All the best
Mike

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Tom [email] on Tue, Jun 8, 2010

That's really cool Mike!
I went out and re-smelled the glutinosa seedling that is supposed to be from palustris pollen. It's not as different from glutinosa as I'd been thinking but I still am fairly certain that it's a hybrid. I'm glad to hear about your results from using glutinosa as pollen parent. I'd been thinking of trying that but didn't get around to it this season. Aside from the palustris hybrid, I've only had one hybrid so far from glutinosa. I'm not sure of the father, but I think it was from the 'Hazeldean' pollen I'd been using on glutinosa that year. There's not much about the flower to indicate 'Hazeldean', but the foliage is different and it's almost completely sterile. The foliage scent is a little weaker and slightly different in quality too.
I'm glad that you guys (you and Don) are also working the glutinosa angle (for fragrant foliage). I think there's a lot of good that can come from using this species instead of (or in addition to) eglanteria.
Tom

Crosses for 2010 already? My first roses just started blooming yesterday. -very jealous-

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Therese Bugnet makes hips with William's Double Yellow, and R. roxburghii, but not with R. primula. R. rox makes hips & winter hardy (in pots yet) seedlings with primula pollen. So what's the difference here? These are observations on two TB plants geographically separated. Naturally, no blooms on actual seedlings.
What do the scientists have to say. Any thoughts, theories?

Thanks! I'm glad you think so too.

Now if only the one runty darker green seedling [not pictured] turns out to really be from the laevigata pollen I was also trying last year on glutinosa - then I'll really be pleasantly surprised.

Jim, did you give up on "86-3"?

Every cross I attempted with this Spring aborted.

Did you determine if any of crosses you made using it last season were hybrids?

Thanks, Robert

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Jim Turner [email] on Sat, Jun 12, 2010

86-3 bloomed during a long spell of heavy rain this Spring. I might have done some crosses with it if the weather had been better. It is a difficult parent. Most of the crosses I've done with it have aborted. The seeds I've gotten from it have not germinated well. I'm not certain that any of the seedlings are hybrids. None of them have had 86-3's great health.

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Robert Neil Rippetoe [email] on Sat, Jun 12, 2010

I'm sorry to say "86-3" exhibited mild to moderate mildew symptoms here this Spring, but then again all the hybrids I've managed to get out of laevigata are also prone to mildew.

Here is what I think is my final list. Ive tried to get as much done with what little sun or dryness we are getting.

Rememberance x Double Red Knockout & Yellow Brick Road
Rememberance x (Sevilliana x Pretty Lady)
Violet Mist x Henry's Blend
Violet Mist x Wild Blue Yonder & Cinco de Mayo
Royal Amethyst x (Rosa canina x Baby Love)
Flower Carpet Amber x "Carefree Copper"
Wild Blue Yonder x Violet Mist

(Solitaire x Baby Love) x Eletric Blanket & Double Red Knock Out

Coral Drift x Therese Bugnet & Nigel Hawthorn
Summer Wind x Rose Gilardi
Summer Wind x Pretty Lady
Summer Wind x Persian Flame
Summer Wind x John Cabot & Napa Valley & Electric Blanket
Shadow Ninja x Pretty Lady & (Sevilliana x Pretty Lady)
Toprose x (Selfridges x Freedom) & Yellow Brick Road)
Solitaire x Westerland & Jacob's Robe & Marilyn Monroe
Shadow Ninja x Double Red Knock Out & Yellow Brick Road
Over the Moon x Winter Sunset
Playboy x Eyes for You & Shadow Dancer & Double Treat
Shockwave x Rememberance & Topaz Jewel
Remember Me x (Selfridges x Freedom)
Playboy x Shadow Dancer
Jubilee Celebration x Toprose & Solitaire
Robert's #4 x Pretty Lady
Shockwave x Pretty Lady

Thats it for now. I wish I could do more but I am unsure if I will be able to.

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Jadae (zone 8b) [email] on Sat, Jun 26, 2010

I finished up today -- finally. The weather has been cooperating, even if a week or so late in usual schedule.

Additional crosses:

Shockwave x Berleburg Castle
Solitaire x Sweetness/Citrus Burst/Orange Crush
(Selfridges x Freedom) x Aperitif
(Sevilliana x Pretty Lady) x Lovestruck/Teeny Bopper
Rememberance x Easy Does It/Pretty Lady
Summer Wind x Violet Mist
Dreaming Spires x Sweetness/Citrust Burst/Orange Crush
(Tatton x Purple Heart) x Violet Mist

I regret using Citrus Burst. I didnt know it was bred from Fourth of July (and thus Roller Coaster), which is a line with massive blackspot issues in this area. I wrongly assumed that it'd be safe since it was a Radler hybrid. Oops. The Orange Crush pollen was predominant anyhow, so I doubt it will be much of an issue in culling if anything germinates.

I'm loooking forward to any seedlings coming from Summer Wind.

Re: Crosses so far 2010

So Scentimental is superior to Fourth of July to use as a striper, Michael?

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Jadae (zone 8b) [email] on Sat, Jun 26, 2010

I think Fourth of July can breed more dramatic colors and pretty nice vigor. I think that Scentimental is more likely to throw orange tones. Scentimental is spotless here, much like Playboy. Fourth of July blackspots really badly here, much like Roller Coaster. However, some have reported that Scentimental can be an issue in their own gardens elsewhere. Regardless, Scentimental is a realy great rose. Its pretty much a pollen parent tho. Fourth of July seems to go both ways. Personally, Shadow Dancer is my favorite breeder for stripes with good health but it seems impossible to find now. I still own my original from the 1990s lol. One could always use the related Rose Gilardi if they can find it. Its pretty healthy. Its never blackspotted here like 99% of minis do. Im sure it can throw full sized roses if crossed with the right thing.

Re: Crosses so far 2010

Posted by Adam Eckstein [email] on Sat, Jun 26, 2010

I believe that Rogue Valley Roses has Shadow Dancer. It i not listed in their catalog but they have such nice people there that if you call them they will probably propagate it for anyone who is interested in it.

I am currently trying to use Rose Gilardi in crosses Jadae. I have only been able to make a few crosses due to the small size of the plant I have. What is amazing is that the small amounts of pollen I have gotten from this one has been so fertile and seems to set on things at a much higher rate. I think I will use this one more in the future.

I have two OP Rose Gilardi seedlings that are striped minis. So far one sets seeds OP and planned. The second hasn't set OP and I've not done planned crosses yet. Both are very disease resistant. Gilardi could be a very good one to use.

Hi Adam, I use Rose Gilardi this year onto Summer Wind. 3 blooms covered 10 hips, which is actually quite a lot for a mini. I hope someone sells Shadow Dancer because its a pretty awesome rose. I'd love to see it on an arbor some day.

Shadow Dancer is available from Burling Leong at her new nursery, Burlington Roses. Shadow Dancer is a valuable resource for breeding full sized striped roses. Highly recommended.

I tried some informal finger pollination on 'Roseraie de L'Ha˙' and it got a giant hip that I can't wait to see what will it produce.

Additionally 'RdlH' liked SOMETHING else in the garden- she has over 10 OP hips, something of a rarity for this rose, correct? They all seem like they'll ripen as well, a few already showing some nice red color.

Rather excited, 'RdlH' is one of my favorite roses, can't wait to see some seedlings!

Thats great to hear, Paul :) Its always been on of my favorites in the garden for all 3 growing seasons. Its never specifically glamorous but its always consistant, pretty and easy to care for. Unlike Dortmund, its also a lot easier to keep in bounds during the growing season.

I've done a little bit more, but nothing really--

Moonsprite X Chanelle

(Prospero X Goldmoss) X (Scarlet Moss X Fakir's Delight)

I think I'm done... it's been difficult to do much since I'm doing other things that's taking up my time.

Hi!

Now its done. :-)

Today I pollinated my last bud for this season.

It was an outstanding year for what I did pollinate and for what did germinate; my first hulthemia-blotch seedling germinated, also one R. stellata mirifica x Veilchenblau seedling.

And I did over 150 pollinations only on my R. stellata mirifica this year, a lot of them did work - I have got hips with already visible - and still greenish seeds from several combinations, some are totally new and never mentioned anywhere, even not as a odd possibility.

And now the number: All in all I did my 1606th bud pollination 20 minutes ago. :-)))

Hihi ... Really 1606 buds! ...

I think I'll never again do so much in one season as I am totaly exhausted now - two months of running around and of thinking and of pollinating - just like a mad mad bee. In this mood you think you'll go crazy, if only you walk past a rose bush in your town that shows some opening flowers ... .
Its too much to do so EVERY year, I know.
But also I know that I will have again and again germinating seedlings throughout the next years out of that work of the last 8 weeks - and also a lot of experience what is working and what will not work.

All in all I had 296 combinations, some of them double and more to get a higher number.

Grx!
Arno

TreasureTrove hopefully all your hard work pays off. 1606 buds is quite a lot. I can not imagine doing that many. Perhaps one of these days. I did not do a lot of different combinations. Only about 15, but those 15 or so I did in bulk so hopefully they will yield something nice.

Hi Adam!

Thank you for your good wishes.Of course it will not always be the number that decides wheather something has good return or not.
I think that there will be years where I will focus only on a few combinations, also.
But ok, I did not plan that huge series in total, I planned about 600 pollinations or so.
One thing came to another, at last its such a crazy big number.
There where some combinations and parents in the series, which are known to be sterile, or nearly sterile, so I already started with pretty high numbers. On R. ecae I also did over 60-80 pollinations, have only 4 hips left (not exactly counted yet), but these ones are possibly of really great combination ... - if they are not selfings or so ... .
So - I got used to it - and opened not just 3 or 5 buds, but often 10 or 20 - or even more - with every new step.
Totally new experience for me - really I got a lasting headache now. ;-)

Grx!
Arno

Rob,
As you have undoubtedly discovered, the 1-72-1 X L83 seedlings are quite fertile, usually in both directions. I hope it proves useful to you! A lot of really good genes in that group.

Paul

This is pretty much what I have left. I edited away crosses that I know have failed there will probably be others that abort. I will make my last cross probably tomorrow or the next day but it won't change the list. Anything with Carefree Beauty, Carefree Cooper, R. foetida persiana or William Baffin as a pollen parent is done in bulk. All crosses on R. foliosa could be self because it always seemed to shed at least a little pollen before I got there. I do have some pollen in the freezer that I am planning to use on miniature this winter. I also might get a cross from Ann Endt or Scabrosa before I am through but I do not thin these will bloom early enough.

I like these two crosses a lot. I usually dislike mini crosses.

Hot Tamale x William Baffin
Sequoia Gold x William Baffin

I would have loved to see Rosa foliosa x Rose Gilardi. That could possibly create an extremely intriguing and useful F1 hybrid :)

By the way, for all you mini fans. You must check out Cinnamon Girl by J/P. I usually LOATHE J/P roses. Theyre mostly garbage with a few rare gems here and there over the years. I bought Cinnamon Girl last February for my gf's mom. Her cat died of kitty leukemia or something similar. I forgot. So, I bought her a rose as close in color as I could get. I couldnt decide between Cinnamon Girl or Coffee Bean (another one of the few excellent minis, imo). However, CB is too orange for what the cat looked like, so I gambled on Cinnamon Girl. Well, the color and plant habit is amazing. Its this odd rustic coral red with a cream reverse. When the blooms age, they pick up mauve tones. The clusters are huge and the form is exhibition style. The vigor is great too. It looks like it would set hips. I bring this all up here because its bred from Hot Tamale :)At any rate, it doesnt have disease up there in SE Washington. They usually get mildew instead of blackspot like here, so I have no clue on its bs resistance. I remember Hot Tamale as moderate in terms of bs resistance relative to other minis (ie. Rise n Shine, Irresistable and Glowing Amber are among the worst -- Scarlet Moss, Cinderella and Playgold among the best). I hope CG winters well. Many minis arent always the greatest in terms of cold hardiness -- although there is no reason they couldnt be in the future. I actually think they'd be more popular against the idea of using so many annuals in gardens if minis were properly compact, spray free and cold hardy. Its just that so many of them mature badly or lol, lethally, in untrained hands. Many home owners are the plant it and forget it type, afterall.

Maybe one of ya folk that uses minis a lot can give Cinnamon Girl a good look. btw, the online photos of it dont really look like it.

"I would have loved to see Rosa foliosa x Rose Gilardi."

I was actually planning to do this cross but I ran out of pollen of Rose Gilardi. Next year I will try it. I also was going to try its pollen on Cornelia. Hopefully my plant will grow large enough so I can us it a lot more.

Jadae thanks for the complement. Overall I want to do miniature crosses that are crossed with something disease resistant or winter hardy. I did a lot of crosses that probably won't bloom this next year but I do have a few that will.

I do have to say the idea of using William Baffin with miniatures is Paul Barden's. I just have different miniatures then he does. I also think that I got the idea of using Carefree Beauty with miniatures from an article written by Lawrence Davis in the newsletter. If not from him then from some one else. I just read it and thought I wanted to try it. Using Cornelia and R. foliosa however I have been wanting to do for a while even before I was influenced by others.

I have sinned. I made more crosses =(

Solitaire x Salita,(Livin Easy x Baby Love), Royal Amethyst and Fragrant Plum

Shockwave x Camelot

Shockwave x Princess Alice

...in all fairness, I have been looking for something useful to combine Camelot with for years.

Most of crosses I did in June didn't take, probably as Jim mentioned earlier due to day time temps right around 100 degree's. I made the mistake of pruning all my pollen parents but not my seed parents....... Seed parents bloomed
early and pollen parents bloomed later .I didn't have much pollen to spread around. As you see I really scrounged pollen from anywhere I could get it. I have multiples of most of these crosses and I have a ton of op hips from the first flush. I should be busy this winter.

Jadae - Shame on you! Actually I been thinking about doing the same thing. For the past few days I been watching Rose Gilardi buds developed and at the same time looking at Scabrosa and Ann Endt and wondering if they would bloom in time for hips to mature if the cross was successful. Both Scabrosa and Ann Endt are new plants but they seem vigorous enough to handle a few hips at least. But I do not know if they would mature in time. They would not bloom out for another week. I was thinking the next week until we got some unusually cool weather.

Have you tried Shockwave x (Livin Easy x Baby Love)? That should like a good cross to me.

Bill it looks like you will have a lot of miniatures coming a long. Good luck!

Bill, I like your wide crosses. It's good to "mix up the pot" a bit to see what's in there! It's been said by others that you need about 100 seedlings from a particular cross to adequately test the range of possibilities. I have to agree that it is probably a good estimate. Some of your crosses might be worth multiplying in a bigger way depending on what you see in your seedlings next year.

Jadae, it's true that we all sin now and then! I quit rose breeding for the year on June 30th, but I already have my eyes on a cross that I don't think I can let go. If they bloom close enough together, a match will be made!

Adam, best wishes on your later crosses!

Jim Sproul

Paul,

I did use 1-72-1 X L83 in quite a few crosses and have found it quite fertile. Thank you for the seedling! I'm excited about several of the crosses made and hope some good things come from them. I'm hoping that the Toy Clown x (1-72-1 x L83) seeds bring out something useful in working towards fertile, healthy and hardy miniatures. I've also used pollen from your seedling on Illusion, Quadra, Westerland, Autumn Sunset, Midnight Blue, Abraham Darby and Crown Princess Margareta. Hopefully something nice comes through. Thanks again.

Rob
